THE CITY OF COFFEE

Medellin has seen a strong demographic expansion since the 1970s, largely caused by the armed conflict and the phenomenon of land expropriation. Thousands of peasants displaced from their land, have settled in the upper part of the Aburrá valley, along the mountain slopes bordering the urban center of Medellin. In these rural areas around the city, they began to cultivate coffee.
