Un caffè per il futuro
This project builds on the initiative “The Coffee City,” implemented in the eastern outskirts of Medellín between 2022 and 2024. The previous project focused on promoting coffee culture as a symbol of social redemption, solidarity economy, and peacebuilding.
Since the 1970s, the city of Medellín has experienced rapid population growth, largely driven by armed conflict and land dispossession. The settlement of farmers along the urban-rural boundary has led to the gradual spread of agricultural activities, with a strong prevalence of coffee cultivation introduced by Colombian migrants. Over time, coffee production in these peri-urban rural areas has increased, consolidating coffee as Medellín’s main agricultural product and contributing to positioning Antioquia as the second-largest coffee-producing department in Colombia.
