A coffee for the future
This project builds on the initiative The Coffee City, implemented in the eastern outskirts of Medellín between 2022 and 2024. The previous project placed particular emphasis on the cultural promotion of coffee, understood as a symbol of social redemption, solidarity economy, and peacebuilding.
Since the 1970s, the city of Medellín has experienced strong demographic growth, largely driven by the armed conflict and the phenomenon of land dispossession. The settlement of farming communities along the border area between the urban and rural zones encouraged the gradual spread of cultivation, with a strong predominance of coffee grown by Colombian migrants. Over time, coffee production in this rural area surrounding the city increased, consolidating coffee as Medellín’s main agricultural product and helping position Antioquia as the second-largest coffee-producing department in Colombia.
