Coffee was introduced in Burundi in the 1920s and started to expand in the 1950s as it was recognized as a crop that would lead to an agrarian revolution for smallholders. Although the yield is lower than in other African countries, farmers pay exceptional attention to detail. Today, more than 600,000 Burundian families are involved in coffee cultivation and processing.​
